What are school hours?
School hours are from 9:00 to 3:45. Drop off starts at 8:45.

Does SCL offer before care or after care?
Yes. Before care is by appointment and can start as early as 8:00. After care is available until 5:45 Mon-Thurs. Current fees are $7 per student for before care and $12 for after care with a $6 rate for each additional child.

Is lunch provided?
No. All students need to have a packed lunch daily.

What do classroom management and social emotional learning look like at SCL?
Our staff is trained in the methods of Responsive Classroom. You can learn more about this set of integrated practices here.

Are grades assigned at SCL?
We do not assign traditional letter grades at SCL. Teachers frequently track student progress through informal and formal assessments. Students have quarterly narrative progress reports to show their growth.

What special area classes do SCL students attend?
All students go to physical education, art and sustainability class once weekly. Additionally, students attend a Passions class of their choice twice weekly.

Do SCL students have homework?
Researchers have a difficult time proving the benefits of homework for young children, and they often see a detrimental effect that is not equitable among students. Younger students will generally not have homework. At times students could bring incomplete classwork home to finish. Older students may start to bring home more traditional homework.

Are SCL students prepared for the rigor of high school?
Yes. Our students are prepared for success in their chosen high schools after graduating from SCL. Our graduates attend a number of local high schools depending on their location.

Is SCL a religious school?
No. School for Community Learning is a secular private school. We are not affiliated with any religious institution.
