MLK Day at School for Community Learning
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at SCL was a day on, not a day off. We value all of the people in our community, both in and outside of the school, and our definition of service is rooted in the ideas of equity and access. Each class participated in a different service project.
- Thanks to the Middle School for all their school cleaning. They all seemed to enjoy visiting Joy House and visiting with the elders.
- Ms. Alayna’s class took care of the birds just in time for snow cover. Then they went to Pogue’s Run and had good discussions about co-ops and food justice in Indianapolis. The Primary class also set up a GO FUND ME site in order to buy a set of reading supplies from Wilson Reading Systems for our struggling readers.
- Ms Kate’s students served lunch to the greater community at the Kheprw Institute. They spent the morning cooking an AMAZING lunch along with our community partners, Food Not Bombs. The student chefs were awesome.
- Mr Owen’s class put together guides to the city – A Guide to Free City Fun. This was the end product of a Passions Class that focused on finding fun, free adventures for children in Indianapolis. They then joined Ms. Kate’s room for lunch.
We strive to help everyone find a way to participate in meaningful service year-round, and we hope to see you next year for our MLK Day of service!
